TLDR:

  • Coinbase processes nearly $1 trillion in stablecoin movement annually, holding $20B in USDC on platform.
  • Base blockchain has processed over $19 trillion in stablecoin volume in 2026, tripling its 2025 total.
  • Coinbase Payments consolidates KYC, custody, fiat rails, and stablecoin APIs into one regulated product.
  • x402, Coinbase’s agentic payments protocol, has processed over 160 million autonomous transactions yearly.

Coinbase Payments is emerging as a full-stack answer to the fragmented world of stablecoin infrastructure. The platform brings together payments tooling, blockchain settlement, stablecoin distribution, and institutional custody under a single regulated product.

For businesses moving money across borders, the pitch is straightforward: one provider, one API layer, and access to Coinbase’s entire global network. The solution targets fintechs, banks, payments companies, and crypto-native builders at any scale.

One Platform Replacing a Web of Providers

The core problem Coinbase Payments solves is fragmentation. Businesses building stablecoin products previously had to source custody, compliance, fiat rails, and technical infrastructure from separate vendors. That process was slow, expensive, and legally complex across multiple geographies.

Coinbase Payments replaces that patchwork with a unified, developer-friendly API layer. Through the Coinbase Developer Platform, businesses access KYC and KYB at scale, virtual accounts, fiat on/off ramps, treasury management, merchant acceptance, and card infrastructure. Every component is interoperable and embedded within the same product.

The regulatory foundation behind the platform is substantial. Coinbase holds more than 80 licenses worldwide and has spent over a decade building its regulated footprint in crypto.

Alec Lovett, Head of Infrastructure Products at Coinbase, explained the demand driving the product: “Every week, I talk to companies who are trying to move money — payments companies, fintechs, banks, crypto-native businesses building the next wave of financial products. They all want the same thing: faster settlement, lower cost, and global reach.”

That compliance infrastructure is now extended directly to any business building on the platform. Coinbase Payments does not require businesses to manage their own regulatory stack across geographies. The entire licensed footprint travels with the API.

Stablecoins, Blockchain, and Custody Built for Institutional Scale

Coinbase Payments is backed by an operation already running at institutional scale. The company processes nearly $1 trillion in stablecoin movement annually and holds close to $20 billion in USDC on platform.

Lovett noted the scale of the shift already underway: “The blockchain Base has processed $19T in stablecoin volume so far this year, and x402, our agentic payments protocol, has processed 160M+ agentic payments in the last year.”

Base delivers near-instant finality and throughput peaks of around 5,000 transactions per second. That capacity handles enterprise-level payment flows without degradation.

For businesses needing cross-chain flexibility, the platform also supports Ethereum, Solana, and additional networks.

Stablecoin support spans USDC, USDT, and PYUSD, alongside local currency options including EURC, AUDD, XSGD, and tGBP.

Businesses requiring branded infrastructure can access Coinbase Custom Stablecoins as a turnkey issuance layer.

Lovett framed the urgency directly: “The shift to stablecoin payments is accelerating and the businesses that move now will set the pace of innovation.”

Custody completes the solution. Coinbase’s institutional-grade custodial infrastructure serves ETF issuers, financial institutions, and government entities, recording zero losses across 14 years.

Recurring SOC 1/2 audits independently verify those controls, giving enterprise clients the assurance required for regulated deployments.
