Avangrid’s major grid investments continue to strengthen system for enhanced storm response and recovery

ORANGE, Conn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, today announced that its utility companies, New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E), Central Maine Power (CMP) and United Illuminating (UI), continue to monitor and prepare for the potential impacts of severe winter weather, including frigid cold, expected across the Northeast this weekend.

“Avangrid continues to make significant investments toward strengthening and modernizing the grid, which puts our utility companies in a better position to prepare for and respond to severe weather events,” said Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda. “As we continue monitoring the weather patterns and likely track of Winter Storm Fern, Avangrid personnel will be ready to respond as needed to any impacts in the communities we serve.”

In advance of the storm, Avangrid’s storm readiness crews are monitoring weather forecasts, planning, readying equipment, and mobilizing employees for storm duty. Crews will be strategically positioned and staffed around the clock to help restore service should outages occur.

Avangrid’s preparation builds on significant investments made throughout 2025 to improve system resilience. Last year, Avangrid’s utility companies installed over 650 smart devices on the grid and replaced 24,000 utility poles. Smart devices provide energy control centers with live readings of the grid, letting operators remotely respond to outages and restore service in as little as five minutes. Many utility poles in Avangrid’s service territory across the Northeast are decades old, making the grid more vulnerable to storm damage and outages. Replacing these aging poles is critical to improving resiliency and energy reliability as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe.

Avangrid stands ready to move forward with the next wave of critical infrastructure investments that are essential to maintaining reliability and meeting the region’s growing energy demands, subject to approval from relevant state regulatory entities. Pending regulatory approval, Avangrid’s investments will help keep the lights on for millions of families across the northeast while advancing economic development, creating jobs, and building prosperous communities.

UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach

The post UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. British crypto holders may soon face a very different landscape as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) moves to expand its regulatory reach in the industry. A new consultation paper outlines how the watchdog intends to apply its rulebook to crypto firms, shaping everything from asset safeguarding to trading platform operation. According to the financial regulator, these proposals would translate into clearer protections for retail investors and stricter oversight of crypto firms. UK FCA plans Until now, UK crypto users mostly encountered the FCA through rules on promotions and anti-money laundering checks. The consultation paper goes much further. It proposes direct oversight of stablecoin issuers, custodians, and crypto-asset trading platforms (CATPs). For investors, that means the wallets, exchanges, and coins they rely on could soon be subject to the same governance and resilience standards as traditional financial institutions. The regulator has also clarified that firms need official authorization before serving customers. This condition should, in theory, reduce the risk of sudden platform failures or unclear accountability. David Geale, the FCA’s executive director of payments and digital finance, said the proposals are designed to strike a balance between innovation and protection. He explained: “We want to develop a sustainable and competitive crypto sector – balancing innovation, market integrity and trust.” Geale noted that while the rules will not eliminate investment risks, they will create consistent standards, helping consumers understand what to expect from registered firms. Why does this matter for crypto holders? The UK regulatory framework shift would provide safer custody of assets, better disclosure of risks, and clearer recourse if something goes wrong. However, the regulator was also frank in its submission, arguing that no rulebook can eliminate the volatility or inherent risks of holding digital assets. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that when consumers choose to invest, they do…
