PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the government will develop housing with lower rental rates for civil servants.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said he found during his visits to several states, including Penang, Perak, Johor and Negeri Sembilan, that civil servants were struggling with increased rental rates.
“We will develop housing for civil servants with cheap rent so that their families will not be burdened. We will expedite these efforts,” he said after Friday prayers at Masjid Jameatus Solehah in Dengkil, Bernama reported.
Anwar said although the government had increased the salaries of civil servants, rising rental rates are still a problem in several states.
“Even though we have increased their salaries by between 15% and 30%, the increases are sometimes not enough to cover higher rents in places like Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban and Ipoh,” he said.
He said government-owned land had been identified for the development of the proposed housing projects.
