From Cecil Rajendra
Flood and fire, heatwave and hurricane.
East and West, North and South – climate change is wreaking havoc!
And, as if we do not already know, eco-experts warn us that 2026 is set to be the hottest year yet in recorded history.
With El Niño around the corner, the worst is yet to come.
It is no longer just global warming. What we are experiencing is global weirding!
Everywhere, people are succumbing to climate-related anomalies: extreme heatwaves, earthquakes, hurricanes, air pollution, flooding, and forest fires.
It is no longer disputed that the primary cause of today’s catastrophic climate change is the burning of fossil fuels, carbon emissions, and greenhouse gases.
Yet everywhere, our captains of industry, leaders, ministers, and governments are in complicit denial. For while acknowledging that climate change is real, they have done little or nothing to stem the thermometer, other than issuing mealy-mouthed statements, passing empty resolutions (like the Rio Declaration), pledging fake promises (like the Paris Accord), holding meaningless summits (like the COP jamborees), and promoting ineffective and fruitless “remedies” such as ESG and carbon trading.
All these token, band-aid measures have been in place for over 30 years but have done nothing to safeguard the state of our planet.
But don’t take my word for it. The proof of their utter failure is amply evidenced by our Earth’s ever-soaring temperature.
Our present-day leaders and governments are far more focussed on short-term capital, profit, and growth than on the future of our children.
In 2025, when Donald Trump took the presidency of the US, his clarion call was: “Drill, baby, drill!”
And every oil and gas producing country, including ours, responded by increasing production and expanding exploration, while hypocritically paying lip service to the dangers of carbon emissions.
So too did the allied motor industry and the construction sector – highways, high-rises, multi-storey car parks, and malls – which account for more than 20% of carbon emissions.
For the record, Malaysia put more than a million motor vehicles on the road in 2025 (less than 2% were electric), and our carbon emissions have doubled over the last 30 years, an increase of 100%.
Meanwhile, our rainforests, green lungs, and open spaces are being sacrificed daily to the twin mammoths of “development” and “growth”.
Almost every country is fixated not on global warming but on “growth”, fully aware that growth spells more cars, more highways, more factories, more malls, and more car parks, which in turn, means increased global warming.
As I sit here and sizzle in the sun, I posit that nothing will put a brake on global warming unless we address the root causes and culprits of carbon emissions and climate change at source.
I am talking here of the oil barons, government ministers of oil and gas-producing countries, giant multinational petroleum conglomerates, rampant motor manufacturers, the construction industry, monoculture plantations, timber overlords, and others.
Unless we take immediate and radical action to stop carbon emissions at source, we will continue to hurtle towards doomsday – the Doomsday Clock today stands at 90 seconds to midnight!
So stop gaslighting us that so-called “green” and “sustainable” projects are in the works to ensure zero carbon emissions by 2050.
All such token measures like carbon trading, ESG initiatives, UN resolutions, and conferences are nothing more than greenwash – as ineffective and futile as emptying a bathtub with a teacup while the taps are still running full throttle.
