PETALING JAYA: Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg has told state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to broaden their responsibilities beyond financial performance to include strengthening Bumiputera participation across key sectors of the economy.

He said SOEs should create employment opportunities, support local industries, strengthen rural economies and ensure more Sarawakians can participate meaningfully in the state’s growing economy, the Borneo Post reported.

“This can be achieved through vendor development programmes, strategic partnerships, inclusive procurement practices and initiatives that create pathways for Bumiputera entrepreneurs and businesses to grow, compete and succeed,” he was quoted as saying at an event in Kuching today.

Abang Johari said the state government must also ensure Bumiputeras are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the increasingly competitive and technology-driven economy.

He said the state administration has approved new policies and programmes for SOEs aimed at accelerating Bumiputera participation in the economy, with a circular to be issued soon by the state financial secretary’s office.

Abang Johari said the state government should review employment schemes across SOEs to ensure they remain aligned with the needs of modern organisations, adding that such reforms would require SOEs to be financially self-reliant and profitable.

“My key message to the ministers in charge and permanent secretaries is that your role is active stewardship, not passive oversight.

“Work closely with the entities under your purview. Understand their challenges, support their transformation efforts, and help remove obstacles that hinder progress,” he said.
