Bringing the West Philippine Sea closer to Filipinos, the University of the Philippines (UP) Marine Science Institute (MSI) launched on Thursday, May 21, its new website exploring the marine biodiversity of Pag-asa Island.

The platform, built on decades of research and conservation efforts, documents the institute’s scientific discoveries on the island.

“The ‘Pag-asa Island: A Hidden Pearl of Biodiversity’ compiles research findings, field photos, and personal reflections from UP MSI’s expeditions to the Kalayaan Island Group, specifically Pag-asa,” the UP MSI said. “This is a webpage created to bring the Filipino people closer to the rich marine life and everyday experiences of our westernmost island.”

The UP MSI, which began conducting extensive research and documentation as early as 1993, has curated an online gallery of marine life, ranging from invertebrates to different kinds of seaweeds observed during their expeditions.

“Researchers keep returning to Pag-asa (which means ‘hope’ in Filipino) whenever opportunities arise, inspired by life’s resilience on this remarkable island and its oceanographic and biological connections to the broader region,” the institute said on its website. “May this special feature inspire hope for the continued resilience of Pag-asa’s rich marine life and action for the wise management and conservation of its natural resources.”

Aside from the galleries, the platform also features articles that summarize researchers’ findings and insights, the latest MSI news, and a timeline of research conducted by the institute in the Kalayaan Island Group.

In one of the website’s “Letters from Pag-asa” entries, UP MSI associate professor Wilfred John Santiañez discussed the importance of seaweeds in sustaining not only marine life but also in “supporting livelihood, providing nutrition, promoting healing, and nourishing crops and livestock” for the locals.

Santiañez also pointed out that while earlier studies assumed Pag-asa Island’s seaweed resources were less diverse, recent UP MSI research found that the island actually hosts a wide range of high-value seaweeds.

“The seaweed resources of Pag-asa Island and its environs have long been considered as less diverse…. Our recent and more intensive work…however, challenges that assumption. We have observed that the area harbors a diverse assemblage of seaweeds…including several species of red seaweeds that have never been described before,” the study stated.

Given this potential, Santiañez stressed the urgent need to invest in and promote the conservation of offshore reef ecosystems to ensure the sustainability of seaweed biodiversity — not just in Pag-asa but also across the Philippines.

“Considering the wealth of seaweed biodiversity in the region, and especially the untapped potential of these underutilized and underdeveloped marine resources, it is imperative that more efforts be made on the conservation and management of offshore reef ecosystems,” he said. “Investing in these efforts [is] crucial as destruction of these vulnerable ecosystems will not only impact the present generation but also the generations to come.”

The UP MSI said the website will be continuously updated with future research findings. The website and the institute’s ongoing expeditions to Pag-asa Island are currently supported by the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives. Rappler.com
