KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — A 46-year-old man was killed moments after changing a punctured tyre when a passing MPV struck him as he removed a makeshift warning bucket from the Cheras-Kajang Highway.

The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene without stopping, police said today.

The collision happened at about 10pm yesterday at Kilometre 13.0 of the highway.

Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said preliminary investigations found that the victim had pulled his silver Toyota Innova onto the left shoulder after one of its tyres burst.

He had been travelling with five passengers.

After replacing the tyre, he walked to the rear of the vehicle to remove the bucket he had placed on the carriageway to warn approaching motorists.

“After changing the tyre, the victim walked to the rear of the vehicle to remove a bucket that had been placed as a warning sign for other road users.

“While the victim was removing the bucket, another red Toyota Innova approached from behind, struck him and continued driving without stopping,” Naazron said in a statement.

The victim, a Malaysian, suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police urged anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the red Toyota Innova involved to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Nur Faezah Mohd Zakria, at 012-326 8496.
