Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said PN, which is contesting 33 seats in the Johor state election, can win a simple majority with Muda, which is vying for four seats.
SIMPANG RENGGAM: Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali is confident that Perikatan Nasional can form the next Johor government with Muda after the state election on Saturday.
Azmin, who is also Bersatu’s election director, said based on the outcome of the last general election, the party stands a chance of winning the 16 seats it is contesting.
“The voters in these constituencies are likely to back Bersatu based on the 2022 results,” he said while campaigning for the party at Kampung Chokro here tonight.
Bersatu won two of the 20 parliamentary seats it vied for in the 15th general election – Pagoh and Mersing.
The are 56 seats up for grabs in the state election, with PN contesting in 33.
Apart from Bersatu, PAS is fielding 11 candidates, the Malaysian Indian People’s Party five, and Pejuang one.
Azmin said PN and Muda, which is contesting four seats, could form the next state government with a simple majority, if they win 29 seats.
His comments on forming the next state government come a day after Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin acknowledged that PN may not be able to do so.
Commenting on PN’s menteri besar candidate, Azmin said the opposition coalition will decide on the matter after the polls.
He said, however, that PN has a few eligible candidates for the post.
“For now, we are going to focus on winning,” he said.
